I am asked all the time for my recommendations for products. Honestly, there are a million and one products out there that are wonderful. BUT, that doesn’t mean they are wonderful to you! It really does come down to some trial and error on your part.
I learned, over the years dealing with my very oily skin, that I prefer an oil free moisturizer, and water based serum with hyuralonic acid, ( my all time favorite skin plumping ingredient) powder mineral foundation, a pretty peachy pink blush ( or a matte bronzer), and a good hydrating spray. In summer I may sweep one shadow over my eye, like Patina, or even just a highlighter, and add a some L’oreal Voluminous mascara, and I call it done. The main thing I know is, in summer, makeup should feel weightless, and resist melting off your face. BUT you still need good prep, and skincare, and of course, sunscreen!
Naturally, I use a lot of my own products, ( pretty much everything I mentioned above I use from my line) but you can search out, and find plenty of great options in all price points.
For facial sunscreen, non-greasy is key. Spf 30 and above is ideal,15 a minimum, and it should wear well under makeup. Sometimes it can even act as your moisturizer if it is emollient enough. I personally carry Bliss facial sunscreen, and also love La Roche Posay facial sunscreen. Both are fantastic and non greasy. And now La Roche Posay products can be found at CVS! ( buy their Effeclear system for my teenagers)
Not having too many layers of creamy or silicone based, products is best to prevent makeup meltdown, so anything that does double duty, such as tinted moisturizer, ( if you missed our last post on making your own look here), or sunscreen as moisturizer, take it! It’s also another reason that powdered mineral foundation can be a friend here, especially if you are extremely oily.
Listen to your skin, is it dry, tight, flaky, oily, in an hour after washing? It can change daily. I switched to a creamy cleanser to help combat some surface dryness, I also switched to only 2x per week with an enzyme based cleanser ( which works to dissolve dead skin cells) and upped my water intake. Combined, all 3 of these, have helped eliminate the surface dryness I was experiencing, and that’s even with being a more oily skintype. So those of you who are dry, need to be extra aware of making sure you are not stripping your skin, AND adding in sufficient moisture.
If you’re truly unsure, it is definitely worth having a professional esthetician evaluate your skin. They can tell a lot, and teach you a lot, about your skin.
So what ARE the essentials for Summer? Only you can decide your daily routine, and how much time you want to invest, but as a pro, for everyone, I mostly reach for; sunscreen, moisture, a good foundation that can double as a concealer, skin brightening peach-pink blush, and a creamy, hydrating lip balm ( that I might tap a little blush into) Add a tad of a highlight like Golden Luster over whole lid and on cheekbones, a coat of waterproof mascara and voila’ a fresh face that can withstand some heat!
